Our Expert in the City today: Josef Schmid (Deputy Mayor of the City of Munich)

Who are you?

My name is Josef Schmid. I am Deputy Mayor of the City of Munich and Head of the Department of Labor and Economic Development.

In what way does the Department of Labor and Economic Development serve the expat community in Munich? Is there any material that you could recommend to expats?

Josef Schmid: For expats, moving to a city abroad poses many challenges: starting a new job, finding a job for your life partner, looking for somewhere to live, moving house, finding schools, sorting out insurance, discovering leisure pursuits, and so on. To help make this transition smoother and easier, the Department of Labor and Economic Development provides a wealth of information about international networks and offerings that are already established here. Our web presence at business-munich.de, for example, contains all kinds of material in English.

"I am glad that you and your family have chosen to come here"

You have supported the Expat in the City Fair from the very beginning. Why is this important to you?

Josef Schmid: Munich is a very cosmopolitan city. People from more than 180 countries live and work here. So we want expats to feel at home when they come here, and the Expat in the City Fair can play an important part in that. It is the perfect place to go to gather information and get in touch with organizations, institutions and people in similar life situations. Another consideration is that, when foreign specialists who have worked in Munich move to other cities or return home, they are obviously very important brand ambassadors for our city.

Do you have some encouraging words or advice for expats in the city?

Josef Schmid: Munich is synonymous with outstanding culture and a superb quality of life. I am glad that you and your family have chosen to come here, and I trust that you will feel at ease and enjoy your time in the Bavarian capital.

Thank you for your time, Deputy Mayor Schmid!
